PLATOON LIST

 

There are 145 different platoons that can be used when building a Gunship mission. These include flyable and non flyable Helos, ground and support platoons.

This list is based upon the one found in GUNSHIP MISSION EDITING by FrankD and Gonzo, but redrawn to show the platoons in numerical order. I have added the original filenames used within Gunship, most of which are a legacy of M1 Tank Platoon. The filenames are of little use in mission building, but in many cases can help to show the reasoning for their original creation. The Type column is included to identify the 'flyable' Helo platoons, the platoons available for 'support' and the non moving 'static' platoons.

I have tried to adhere to the platoon names that are in current use, but decided to change a few in order to better describe their use. For instance, Infantry platoons now all have unique names and are listed here as squads. The incorrectly named Red SM-240 SPG batteries are re-named as SP mortars and the BM9A52 (platoon 95) is renamed 9K58 Smerch. 9A52 refers to the launch vehicle, while 9K58 is the designation for the firing battery as a unit.

Note that the number is the 'Platoon number' used in the mission file and the vehicles are listed in order, with the first being the platoon command vehicle.

Blue Company HQs

Another anomaly that was cleared up by the Gunship filenames, are the 8 seperate entries in the original platoon list for Blue MBT HQs. The Gunship filenames show these units as HTH 1-4 and HIH 1-4. Looking at the filenames and the vehicle mix, what we actually have here are 4 MBT HQs and 4 IFV HQs. I think that this is an invention of the Gunship developers, as I have been unable to find these acronyms in any US Army TOE. Best guess is that the acronym HTH stands for Hybrid Tank HQ or Higher Tank HQ and represents a Task Force HQ, at Company or reinforced Company level.

 

ADV Hummer

Lots of confusion arose over the air defense version(s) of the Hummer. The original BATTN HQ listing showed both a Hummer Avenger and an Avenger? These names are also used in the Gunship screen view of the platoon.

 

Puma (platoon 140)

No such animal. Microprose generally got their tech stuff spot on, so I'm not sure what they were thinking here. It probably should have been the Luchs (Lynx), an 8 wheeled armoured car, or the Fuchs (Fox), a 6 wheeled APC/Recon vehicle. What we actually got, was a USMC LAV with a Marder turret.

Though not strictly accurate, platoon 16 (LAV Mortar) does give a reasonably good representation of a pair of Fox NBC Recon Vehicles. (And no, this is not an armoured film crew). Although the vehicle should be 6 wheeled and would normally operate singly, it looks close enough. Just make sure it's got HOLDFIRE and BYPASS orders.

 

* SAM HQ (platoon 71)

This platoon has rather unique behaviour. The platoon is basically static, as the  2x P-15 Flatface Radar vans are fixed in place by the platoon start position. But the MT-LB command vehicle will respond to normal movement orders, so if you give the platoon multiple WP orders, the MT-LB can be driven around as a single vehicle.
